Penny Ranch

Set in the open valley near Driggs, Idaho, Penny Ranch was envisioned as a family retreat and an exploration of site-driven design. With sweeping views of the Teton Range to the east and the wooded rise of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest to the west, the plan was carefully oriented to capture light, manage snow, and harmonize with the surrounding landscape.

Penny Ranch was envisioned by James and Gabrielle Kuhn in collaboration with Ho & Lacy Architects as a retreat shaped by its surroundings near Driggs, Idaho. Every aspect of the design reflected James’s ability to balance bold architectural form with practical building insight—from orienting the home to capture mountain views and light, to pairing a strong, protective exterior with warm, refined interiors. The details reveal his eye for proportion, materiality, and livability.

More than just a set of renderings, Penny Ranch illustrates James’s approach as both builder and designer. It stands as an example of how he weaves together craft, vision, and site-specific design to create spaces that are personal yet enduring. The project captures the essence of his style: thoughtful, precise, and rooted in the landscape of the Teton Valley.
